The fans should booing the Jays until they are hoarse.
What is about Toronto fans? Whether it’s baseball or hockey?
I know Canadians are a polite lot. Heaven forbid they offend anyone. The fact is booing is a longstanding right of every red blooded fan to call out the bums.
They are paying big bucks to see their favourite sports team play their hearts out, and have every right to voice their discontent when they don’t perform, especially Jays fans.
The Jays, which last year made fans across the country proud by making it to the World Series, are presently at the bottom the America League East standing. It will take a miracle for them to earn a wild card spot.
How the mighty have fallen.
Can you imagine Yankees fans putting up with their team wallowing in last place in the American League East. They are likely to tear the stadium down.
First baseman Vladimir Guerrero shoulders some of the blame for the poor showing this year. His bat hasn’t just gone to sleep, it’s comatose. The $500 million man has only hit six home runs this season, none at the Rogers Centre.
Equally absurd, Guerrero is still a fan favourite.
Blue Jays manager John Schneider says the only hope his team has of making the playoffs is the fact the American League is so weak this season. It has often been said that hope is not a plan.
The Toronto Blue Jays Fan Club Facebook site is littered with fans making all kinds of excuses for their team’s losing ways: it’s injuries, they are just going through a slump, there is still time to turn it around.
Here’s a sample of a post from a die-hard fan. “It’s hard to watch after last year, but I love this team and will continue watching and cheering when they do have a win.”
This disillusioned fan and others should be calling for heads to roll, but oh no. They will sit on their hands and clutch their patron saint of lost causes medallion to their bosom and pray for a miracle.
Until Jays fans, or for the matter Leaf fans, start wearing bags over the heads and start demanding more, then mediocre is good enough.
